A Moody Ruby Beach Sunset
A golden sunset and a little lantern light
Often times couples focus a bit too much on the amount of time for a shoot and not on how best to use that time. This shoot with this lovely couple was only about 45 minutes from first shot to last but boy was it special. With a more traditional wedding planned the following day on the puget sound, Caden and Brenna wanted to still have an adventure shoot on the Olympic Coast. So we split a little coverage time from the wedding day and shifted it to a sunset session. As with many shoots in the wilderness there were a few delays but that’s just part of shooting in the national parks. Plan to arrive early to have a little buffer time for your shoot. But the time we had left was the best moment of the day to be out on Ruby Beach. The sea stacks and crashing waves look magnificent even in an oppressive noon day sun, but in the warm light of a setting sun the slick rocks and wet sand really comes alive. So we shot our hearts out out there. As the last bit of light faded I brought out one of my new favorite lighting tools, a classic red lantern with warm LEDs, and took some of my favorite photos of the year. While the LED lights may not warm you up looking at the lantern photos certainly will. And Ruby Beach was really working with us this day providing a cold moody sky that was such a nice contrast to the lantern light. I can’t wait to get out there again for more!
Photo Tip
Now your wedding attire isn’t cheap so it’s totally understandable to want to keep it clean. But consider going a little crazy when you’re eloping. Getting in the water or close to it may be cold and sandy but in ten years when you’re looking back at the photos you’ll be thankful you did. Just make sure to bring some warm dry clothes to change into on the drive back!
