Magical Forest Elopement on the Redwood Coast
California’s hidden winter gem, the Redwood coast
The Sierra mountains seem to get all the attention in California. With multiple incredible locations that are easily accesible and well developed its easy to see why. But come wintertime that mountainous landscape gets snowed in and eloping there becomes a lot more difficult. If you’ve been seeking a magical destination for your winter elopement, I have an incredible suggestion; The Redwood Coast. This stretch of northern California’s coastline offers an enchanting backdrop of towering old growth coastal Sequoias, and rugged beaches. Just imagine walking through the lush ferns and saying "I do" amidst the grandeur of towering redwoods, their majestic branches swaying gently in the breeze. The soft, diffused light filtering through the thick forest canopy creates a serene setting, perfect for capturing breathtaking photos that will be cherished for a lifetime. And you don’t have to worry about it getting snowed in!
This incredible couple chose to elope to the Redwoods right at the start of the year. January brings a unique charm to the Redwood Coast, with crisp air, dramatic fog and moody lighting. While winter may not fully descend upon the region, rain and storms are common so you’ll have to be ok with a little rain on your wedding day. Hiring an elopement photographer that can be flexible is a big help as you can shift your date if there’s going to be too much rain for your liking. A big advantage of eloping this time of year is that there are next to no crowds and you can explore the region in solitude. Couples can cozy up together beneath the towering trees, exchanging vows in a private ceremony surrounded by nature's beauty. As you plan your elopement to the Redwood Coast in January, be sure to pack layers to stay warm and comfortable amidst the cooler temperatures. Embrace the season by incorporating cozy blankets, hot cocoa, and flickering candles into your ceremony, creating a romantic atmosphere that perfectly complements the natural beauty of your surroundings.
On this little adventure we did a little bit of everything. From some light rain and a somewhat sketchy water crossing that my rental definitely did not like, to misty praries full of grazing elk. But honestly the star of the show was this bride’s stunning green velvet dress. By far one of the coolest wedding dresses I’ve had the pleasure of photographing. I really can’t wait to get back out here again this year!
